Entitlements and fairness:: an experimental study of distributive preferences
نویسندگان
چکیده
Under three different rules for allocation of initial income we elicit experimental subjects’ preferences for income redistribution using an incentive compatible elicitation mechanism. The three income allocation rules are designed to capture preferences for distributive justice among subjects. The concern is motivated by claims in some of the experimental economics literature that non-self-interested motives often underlie individual behavior. We cannot reject self-interest in favor of any redistribution motives based on our observations. Almost all individuals chose the income distribution which maximized their own income — high income individuals chose no redistribution and low income individuals chose perfect equality in income distribution. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The norm of distributive Justice and its relation to fairness and equity with an emphasis on Imam Ali`s governmental ethic
As is understood by governmental ethics, governors should distribute possibilities and economical and social opportunities among citizens according to distributive justice. In this paper, the author, surveying and criticizing the views in the field, has shown that the type of work, need and public equality taken as norms in the views, may be counted as the ways for recognizing personal rights n...
متن کاملRisk, Entitlements and Fairness Bias: Explaining Preferences for Redistribution in Multi-person Setting
Researchers frequently studied the casual relationships of other-regarding preferences by applying experimental methods in bilateral settings (e.g., dictator game and ultimatum game). We use a framed experiment on taxes to study preferences for redistribution in a multi-person setting. We find presence of heterogeneous preferences with a substantial share of tax rate choices in line with both p...

متن کاملRevealed Notions of Distributive Justice I – Theory #443
We provide a framework to decompose preferences into a notion of distributive justice and a selfi shness part and to recover individual notions of distributive justice from data collected in appropriately designed experiments. “Dictator games” with varying transfer rates used in Andreoni and Miller (2002) and Fisman et al. (2007) can be used to assess individuals’ preferences, but – with the he...
متن کاملJustice Context and Changes in Fairness-Related Criteria Over Time
Research on distributive, procedural, and interactional justice has shown that individuals have strong preferences for specific fairness-related decision criteria (e.g., equity, etc.) but that the relative importance of these criteria varies as a function of social context. Students offered importance ratings of 21 justice criteria three times over a semester. Multilevel growth curve modeling s...
